ABSTRACT

Chaplain is defined as a “Christian Clergyman attached to a private chapel of a prominent person or institution or ministering to a military body, professional group, etc.” (World English Dictionary). A police chaplain is a minister in a law enforcement setting. Each police department is free to set the requirements and conditions upon which police chaplains serve. Two such organizations that offer guidelines, and training, for police chaplains are the International Conference of Police Chaplains and American Police Chaplains Association based out of Michigan. The American Association of Police Chaplains is a distinctly Christian nonprofit organization. The statement of purpose for the American Police Chaplains Association is: “When we are able to rescue others, we should do so at all costs. Ask God for direction-then act! He may have placed you here ‘for such a time as this!’” (Esther 4:14, New King James version, in American Police Chaplains Association, n.d.).
