There was only one entrance other than the railway siding 'so that every body and every thing entering or leaving the Asylum must come under observation of the Porter at the Entrance Lodge ... situated to the left within the Entrance Gates'. The lodge also housed 'a Waiting-room where Visitors produce their orders for admission; Tradesmen and all other persons explain their business and are instructed by a Porter how and where to proceed'.5
