ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses the role of presidential agency in US foreign policy. The book presents a case study comparison of the foreign policies of Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan, developing a multi-level analytical framework focusing on the president's interaction with the international system, the executive and the Congress. It places Truman and Reagan within the wider context of US foreign policy during the Cold War and assessing their legacies. The book proceeds with a final analysis of the wider conceptual issues raised by the study of presidential agency in US foreign policy. The legacy of Truman is therefore central to our understanding of both the development of the Cold War and the broader role of the presidency in US foreign policy.
