ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role that major international environmental conventions may play in ensuring environmentally sustainable operation of the ship-breaking industry. It presents an overview of some the International Maritime Organization (IMO) marine environmental conventions that may be relevant to the shipbreaking industry. The chapter also presents a critical analysis of this international convention related to hazardous wastes, which is highly relevant for the prevention of environmental pollution from the shipbreaking industry. It investigates the applicability of the Stockholm Convention and the Rotterdam Convention to the shipbreaking industry. The chapter introduces the Basel Convention and critically explains the major legal issues relating to the application of this convention in the shipbreaking industry. It also introduces the Basel Guidelines adopted by the Conference of Parties (CoP) of the Basel Convention and their role in the environmentally sound management of the shipbreaking industry.
