ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the importance of the spiritual dimension and the Islamic religion for young Muslims by engaging religious education (RE) needs to form an essential part of the holistic education of the young Muslim. It then explains how this form of the spirit can be addressed by RE teachers of Muslims and others, involved in religious education to help prepare young Muslims for a rich spiritual life as Muslims in conversation with and respect for a multi-faith world. However, as the chapter also explores the differences in interpretative world-view when thinking about Islam of the RE teacher and the Muslim pupil also represent a vital opportunity to break through 'either-or', Manichean world-views and to provide an esoteric/internal dimension to exoteric belief. Finally, it outlines the ICR approach to help RE teachers bring about 'learning about' and 'learning from' and 'learning for' religion and to inject some welcome 'seriousness' into the study of RE.
