ABSTRACT

Executive functioning covers a number of significant cognitive skills that enable us to negotiate the daily demands placed upon us and includes activities such as planning and organising our day, solving problems as they arise and initiating activities relevant to what we need to complete. It also enables us to change plans or actions if they are not succeeding or if something changes or to react to something new, different or unexpected: to ‘think on our feet’. It also enables us to monitor our behaviour and to make sure it is appropriate for the tasks set and the situations we find ourselves in.
