ABSTRACT

It is often assumed that challenging behaviour exhibited by someone suffering an ABI is a consequence of that injury. This may be the case but it is crucial towards understanding the person’s current behaviour to have knowledge of them pre-morbidly: simply put, what they were like before their ABI. It may be the case that previously existing patterns of behaviour caused the ABI, although in many instances, the ABI is entirely unrelated to this. However, there are occasions when the ABI may have resulted from physical aggression, such as a fight, or from recklessness such as poor driving leading to a car crash. Another possibility is that the person may have had a previous ABI that affected their behaviour.
