ABSTRACT
ABI may be caused by accidents or by diseases or infections. It is an ‘umbrella’ term, referring to what can be sub-divided as:
• traumatic brain injury (TBI) – caused by external forces, i.e. accidents or other injuries (sometimes previously termed a ‘head injury’)
• atraumatic or non-traumatic brain injury – caused by illness or infection affecting the brain.
