ABSTRACT

This chapter explores its impact on the relationship between national attachment as well as critical views and inclusive immigration attitudes in Switzerland. It examines the indirect paths from political ideology to support for granting citizenship through national attachment and critical views. Constructive patriotism has indeed been defined as critical views of the nation accompanied by the desire to change the criticized aspects. Confirming the need for separate measures, recent studies have suggested that the endorsement and monitoring of democratic principles is responsible for the inclusive impact of patriotism on attitudes toward immigrants. In the Netherlands, Dutch citizens who reported their national belonging as an important part of their identity expressed a lower support for immigrant minorities' rights. For instance, in 1995, it transpired that funds stolen from Jews during World War II were still 'dormant' in Swiss banks.
