ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ways in which halal production addresses the ethical debate about animal suffering. It investigates the attachment and the practical expertise of human actors taking part in an ethical issue, namely non-human animal suffering. The chapter presents the assemblage surrounding ethical halal, that is to say, the political, economic and technological variables shaping the global form in Belgium. Meriem and Gerlando created Green Halal in 2010 after they had seen the documentary 'We feed the world', which is about industrial animal breeding and slaughter. Two main technologies surround the emergence of ethical halal: The internet; the various ways of stunning animals before slaughter, electric shock and stunbolt gun. Meriem and Gerlando not only spread principles and advice for a new ethic of consumption. They also try to apply them. Much like other Green Halal members, they consume organic food; they also buy organic cosmetics.
