ABSTRACT
Most psychoanalysts have come to recognize that nothing short of a multiplicity of perspectives and methods is necessary in a discipline having a subject matter as complex and subtle as psychoanalysis. The postmodern zeitgeist supports such multiplicity by acknowledging the legitimacy and desirability of scholarship that accepts numerous interpretations of experience and encourages the advancement of knowledge through ever-widening intellectual perspectives. Yet fragmented approaches to knowledge continue as an artifact of traditional scholarship, the natural limitations of the human intellect, and additional cultural, political, and economic factors.
