ABSTRACT

An important issue is what role schools should play in the regulation, education and control of young people's use of social media. Given the significant focus on the risks and harms young people are thought to face on the Internet and in their use of social media, it should not surprise that the role of the school system is said by many to be that of providing education and warnings about those risks. It seems readily accepted by education authorities that social media is part of the new landscape of work and that as a consequence young people must be educated in the use of social media applications if they are to function successfully in that terrain. An example of a school adopting gendered assumptions in their school policies occurred in Melbourne, Victoria in 2016 when a school told their female students that their legs exposed by short skirts distracted male students.
