ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the research on inclusion, draws connections for mentoring, and discusses implications of mentoring and inclusion for work organizations in India. While the topic of inclusion is broad, the chapter focuses on gender and draws a linkage to the need for additional research on the unique experience of women in India as an emerging segment within the global workforce. Specifically, it reviews the research on inclusion, draw connections for mentoring, and discuss implications of mentoring and inclusion for work organizations in India. Offering a framework for understanding social inclusion and exclusion, the chapter discusses the various psychological effects of exclusion, motives invoked by it, and potential responses and interventions to address them. Diversity management must fundamentally address the way people deal with each other and the way leaders engage with all in the organization, including the role that leaders play in creating and sustaining effective mentoring relationships.
