Foucault referenced changes in the way discipline was being understood and used as a guiding force of social life. He explains that the focus of carceral controls had come to represent control of the individual body, rather than bodies, en masse. Discipline became the driving force of all social life at the consensus of the masses. Individuals came to believe self-control and self-discipline were the natural and rational means to achieving virtue and success. The idea that deviance is socially constructed, rather than a natural and objective force internal to the individual, is the driving conceptual paradigm that pushed positivism to the sidelines and opened up whole new ways of looking at differences in human social behavior. Stuart Henry and Dragan Milovanovic provide a clear explanation of the processes of construction and the subsequent reconstitution of social reality. Core meaning constructs are typically pre-constructed elsewhere as part of people's common 'stock of knowledge'.
