ABSTRACT

Introduction In the previous five chapters we have discussed some characteristics o f a space economy under full capitalist competition; showing how the prices for produced and non-produced commodities vary geographically, and how prices, patterns o f com m odity exchange and the location o f com m odity production are co determined. W e have also examined the labour value o f commodities and its circulation, and examined conflicts between capitalists, workers and landlords that are inherent to the structure o f capitalism. This entire edifice is predicated on the ability o f capitalists to sell their commodities at a price that allows them to make a profit. W ithout successful sales, the money and labour invested in production will not be realized, and com m odity exchange will break down. The prospect o f a profit-maximizing geography o f production is o f little interest to capitalists if they cannot realize those profits.
