ABSTRACT

Planning for Critical Democratic Literacy (CDL)-focused social studies and literacy integrated instruction requires understanding content, gathering and evaluating materials, planning instruction and assessment. Chronology is an essential concept in social studies, particularly in history. Chronological thinking is the ability to think about the past, present, and future. Sequencing in literacy focuses on literal comprehension of a text. Reader's theater in literacy focuses on developing literacy skills such as fluency and comprehension in all types of texts, such as poems and informational texts. Planning frame work contains four planning templates with guiding questions based on Shulman's conceptualizations: Content Knowledge, Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), Curricular Knowledge and Strategic Knowledge Planning's. PCK is the most important part of being able to integrate the curriculum for CDL. Content knowledge reflects the subject area knowledge. Curricular knowledge encompasses all of the materials people have from books, to videos, to standards and assessments. Strategic knowledge is a broad notion for people purposes.
