ABSTRACT

Climate change is a ‘wicked problem’ that is likely to cause dramatic changes to local communities and add complexity to local scale planning approaches. Wicked problems are difficult to define and involve a diverse set of stakeholders who are likely to disagree on many aspects of the problem. In this chapter the challenge of adapting to climate change impacts – specifically sea level rise – is discussed through the lens of wicked problems and using examples from New South Wales in Australia. Use of this lens may help planners to consider more creative approaches to climate change adaptation other similarly wicked problems they are likely to encounter in their careers.
