ABSTRACT

The closing chapter identifies several themes that cut across many of the Handbook’s 26 chapters: the overemphasis of the economy on planning issues; the prevalence of conflicts across a broad spectrum of planning concerns; and the lack of national government involvement in urban issues. The chapter also provides some context for international readers or those not familiar with Australian urban and regional planning by examining how Australian planning theories, practices and education compare internationally and noting key areas for further investigation. Finally the future role of Australian planning in Asia was considered.
