ABSTRACT

In what ways does it make sense to conceive of creativ ity as having a geography? Creativity happens in lots of differ ent places, does it matter where? Does the loca tion of creat ive endeav ours make any differ ence to their content and conduct? Further, does the creat ive activ ity affect the sites and venues at which it happens? The answer to all of these ques tions is yes. Creativity, in short, has a whole set of geograph ies, and in turn creat ive prac tices produce geograph ies, they make places, shape the bodies, subjectiv it ies and minds of those conduct ing them, and weave together communit ies and evolve envir on ments. Across a series of nine sites, from the body to the city, the land scape and envir on ment and the nation, this text is going to explore these crit ical geograph ies of creativ ity, using this as a purchase point onto the richly differ ent and often contrast ing under stand ings of creativ ity. The aim at each site will be to explore tensions between differ ent forms of creativ ity found at that loca tion, demon strat ing how geography matters to under stand ing creativ ity, but equally how creativ ity matters to the produc tion and under stand ing of geograph ies.
