ABSTRACT

In his Presidential address to the Institute of British Geographers in 1960, Professor W. G. East, talking on 'The geography of land-locked states', made reference to only one potential Mrican example, the Central Mrican Federation. It is a measure of the rapidity with which the political map of Mrica has changed that in western Mrica there are now five land-locked nations, namely the republics of Mali, Upper Volta, Niger, Chad and Central Mrica.
