T h u s far the discussion has slowly traversed the lower levels of the hierarchy of archaeological entities, carefully defining the terms as they were encountered. T h is ascent has involved an investigation of the nature of archaeological attributes, their com bination in particular artefacts and in the populations of artefacts called artefact-types. T h e next stage of the climb must negotiate the difficult and obscure form ations of the assemblage and the culture (fig. 49).
