ABSTRACT

The Future of Erotic Role-Play Through ethnographic research, which used participant experiences as data and an abductive research strategy to interpret the data within researcher experience and theoretical texts. This chapter reviews each of the three research questions and their answers to summarise the major findings of the research. The primary finding is that erotic role-play is used to explore non-normative sexuality. The final, major finding of the research is that participants found multiple pleasures in erotic role-play that troubled the idea of crossover. The rules of erotic role-play mandate character actions be kept within the diegetic frame although the constant management work of participants attests this was not always clearly or easily done as previously asserted. The similarity in findings between the two groups, despite differences in medium, suggests a pre-existing, unnecessary distinction between building friendships online and offline.
