ABSTRACT

We introduce a data-driven systems approach for managing the risks and opportunities arising from a focal organization’s stakeholder relations. The approach involves measuring the social license to operate (SLO) granted by stakeholders and the strength of the network connections among the stakeholders, then using agent-based modeling to predict which initiatives would do the most to raise the SLO. We demonstrate the approach using data from interviews with over 600 stakeholder organizations at six mines in five African countries.
