Conferencing is scary because it requires the one thing that I can’t give you: time. You need time to be able to conference with your students about their papers. One of the reasons why I favor the unit planner where you teach a minilesson one day and then have students apply the minilesson on a second day is because that automatically gives you time to meet with students to conference about their papers (see chapter 1).
