ABSTRACT
At the Millennium Summit in September 2000, perhaps the largest gathering of world leaders in history adopted the United Nations (UN) Millennium Declaration, committing their nations to work on achieving eight specific development goals and setting out a series of time-bound targets. It was a bold initiative that called for action to address endemic problems that were plaguing a majority of the world’s population; most having existed since people walked the earth (see Figure 2.1).
