ABSTRACT

The Regent Park redevelopment began in 2005. This chapter examines a linked survey of young people's experiences of Regent Park redevelopment interviewed youth from some of those households as well as some others from the community. The population of Regent Park, and of the study sample, is ethno-culturally diverse. In recent years Regent Park has evolved into an immigrant reception area. Prior to the start of redevelopment, the Regent Park neighbourhood had a higher population of immigrants, visible minorities, and people whose first language was neither English nor French, than the Toronto metropolitan area as a whole. Personal interviews were conducted in participants' homes or other location of their choice, including project office space within Regent Park or a quiet study room in the local public library branch. This study has been conducted, for the most part, without the active participation of the housing authority, Toronto Community Housing Corporation.
