ABSTRACT

Regent Park in particular was situated within walking distance of Toronto's downtown, cheek-by-jowl with neighbourhoods where house prices were soaring. However, prior to making any redevelopment plans, the Toronto Community Housing Corporation undertook to assess the Regent Park community's readiness for such an initiative. The researchers who led the consultation acknowledged that the residents of Regent Park had little reason to trust the Toronto Community and Housing Corporation (TCHC's) representatives as they set about their work. In 2004 TCHC commissioned a Social Development survey of services and facilities available to Regent Park residents before redevelopment. One more important difference between the new Regent Park and its predecessor is the increased emphasis on community involvement. The new rent-geared-to-income (RGI) housing will match the old Regent Park by number of rooms, but the rooms may be somewhat smaller in square footage.
