ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews two sets of relocation accounts, organized according to whether their temporary replacement housing was located inside or outside of the Regent Park boundaries, and examining the ways distance affects their lived experiences of relocation. Some of the households are families with children of school age, and these stories present the parents' perspectives on the relocation experience, with some input from teenage children. It should be noted that the Tenant Agreement for Regent Park set out the terms of the relocation from the tenant's point of view. The first redevelopment plan called for the entire project to be completed in eleven years, with demolition beginning in 2006 and the last new housing units completed in 2017. The chapter discusses the community update meeting at the start of Phase 3 of Regent Park redevelopment, at which Greg Spearn, promised residents that Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) would accelerate the pace of building new housing.
