ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of the concepts covered in the preceding chapter of this book. The book examines the securitisation of climate migration in the context of climate change politics. It aims to grasp complexity in securitisation processes by engaging with diverging views on security or on security measures that can emerge in different contexts and/or in securitiser audience interactions. The pragmatic framework for analysis on securitisation, developed in the book, provides insight into the complexity of securitisation processes. The book demonstrates that securitisations in the realm of climate change are promoted through exceptional discourse, while seeking to endorse a rather piecemeal and technocratic approach to the management of carbon emissions. It finds no compelling evidence that the government of India is currently drawing on the notion of climate migration to justify its restrictive immigration policy. Securitising moves on climate migration work to convince states to do more on the mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
