ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces readers to relationships between indigenous identities and leadership in diverse educational environments and institutions and will benefit policy makers in education, student affairs professionals, scholars, faculty and students. Schimmel Shoni is the first tribal member to play Division she collegiate basketball. She was the starting guard for the Louisville women's basketball team. Growing up Indian taught her how to be stronger, tougher, wiser, more determined, and more resilient. Shoni represented all collegiate women athletes past, present, and future as well as Native American women. In 2013, Louisville women's basketball team began the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament as a fifth seed. Out around mid-court she tried to elude her with a behind-the-back dribble and then a drive cross-court to the basket; as we both got to the hoop at about the same time she spun and put up a reverse layup in with her back to the basket over the extremely long outstretched arm of Britney.
