ABSTRACT

In the early phase of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), therapists will work with clients to identify their disturbed feelings and self-defeating behaviours; teach them the Activating Event, Beliefs about Activating Event, Consequences (ABCs) of REBT; and dispute their specific irrational beliefs. They help clients to identify, challenge and change their core irrational beliefs. From the middle of therapy onwards, it is helpful to encourage therapist's clients to identify subtle irrational beliefs that may be present in their verbalizations and behaviour, but which may not be immediately related to their disturbed feelings and behaviours at C. Implicit irrational beliefs may also be present in subtle forms of client behaviour. When clients have made progress in changing their core irrational beliefs and have begun acting according to their new core rational beliefs, therapist may then draw their attention to the subtle operation of irrational beliefs in their everyday talk and behaviour.
