ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests different assignments at different stages of the therapeutic process, but tailors them to the specific requirements of individual clients. Over the course of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), different homework assignments will become more relevant and important at different points in the therapeutic process. At the beginning of REBT, encourage your clients to carry out data collection assignments, particularly if they find it difficult to identify such factors during therapy sessions. Tailor suggested material to the comprehension level of clients and with due respect to their particular problems. The self-help books written by Windy Dryden and by Paul Hauck are particularly useful in that each is focused on a particular client problem such as anger; depression; and anxiety. Finally, in vivo or behavioural assignments are particularly useful for helping your clients deepen their conviction in their new rational beliefs by practising acting on them in real-life settings.
