ABSTRACT

Clients are generally ambivalent about facing adversity when carrying out homework assignments. They want to address their problems, but they would rather do this without facing adversity. John, the client, was socially anxious about meeting females because he was scared that would reject him. As his therapist, Windy Dryden was pleased that he may have found girlfriend, but Windy Dryden also knew that he had not really faced adversity while doing his homework assignment and did hardly any rehearsal of his rational beliefs and little he did was spoiled by alcohol. John, in short, had not gotten the three rejections and therefore had not faced this adversity while rehearsing his rational beliefs with his alcohol-free mind. Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) argues that emotional disturbance arises in context of adversity it is important that your clients practise their newly acquired rational beliefs while facing this adversity.
