ABSTRACT

As one gain greater experience in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) and get supervised in the work by different REBT supervisors, one will discover disputing techniques that are particularly successful with a wide variety of clients. Windy Dryden presents three disputing techniques which he has personally found quite useful in conveying important rational principles to clients, they are: the 'Friend Dispute', the 'Terrorist Dispute', using Time-Tripping Imagery as Part of the Disputing Strategy. The purpose of the 'friend dispute' is to help clients to see that they hold double standards. The purpose of the 'terrorist dispute' is to help clients understand that they can stand or tolerate conditions or situations they think are unbearable and that many situations are often worth tolerating. When one disputes the clients' irrational beliefs, one will find that some clients cling rigidly to those beliefs for that Windy Dryden uses time-tripping imagery.
