ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. It reports on the extent of bullying in UK universities and explores how far the cultural milieu of higher education is exacerbating and normalising behaviours of harassment. Drawing upon large-scale quantitative studies, as well as case study material, the chapter explores the prevalence and correlates of homophobia in university contexts focusing particularly upon LGBT student inclusion and the challenges that universities face in promoting equality on campus. The chapter explores the types of sexual bullying among university students, especially where trust is betrayed, and the impact on mental health. This chapter presents research addressing this issue in the light of the introduction of legislation at the federal and provincial levels in Canada. It concludes with a discussion on how universities could play a part in supporting victims of sexual bullying and implications for student counselling services.
