ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on retirement investment vehicles that are available outside of an employer and some of the most common employer-sponsored plans that you may come across during your working years. An important concept to understand, with regard to saving for retirement, involves the structure of retirement accounts themselves. The different types, whether they are individual retirement accounts (IRAs) or ones that are sponsored by your employer, are simply the legal entity in which you are going to have other investments. IRAs are an investment vehicle through which individuals can save money for their retirement. The chapter discusses three types of IRAs, such as traditional IRA, Roth IRA and SEP IRAs, and examines how they are different from one another. There are some other retirement accounts that can be opened and maintained by individuals who are self-employed. Two common ones are Solo 401(k) and Keogh plan.
