ABSTRACT

This chapter provides valuable advice for the performing artist such as an actor, dancer, lighting guru, costumer, or stagehand, on investing, saving, and building a diversified and stable financial portfolio. It also provides unique strategies for integrating financial awareness and planning into the life as an artist, and how that can help to provide a better sense of financial security. Currently, banking in the United States is organized and overseen by the Federal Reserve System but this was not always the case. The chapter focuses on some of the types of cash investments that are available and comply with the premise of the dollar unit itself not changing: checking accounts, savings accounts, money market accounts and certificates of deposit. The interest earned on cash investments is usually taxable. Cash investments play an important role in a well-balanced portfolio by providing a stable base.
