ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about SENCos in developing a robust knowledge and understanding of the theoretical, practical and political aspects of leading and managing change. Cowne adapted ideas first expounded by Georgiades and Phillimore to develop what she called the four golden rules for SENCos. These are especially relevant if the SENCo starts a change management project alone or a course project with a few colleagues. Action research is a form of practitioner research carried out by teachers in their own schools and could be a useful tool for giving structure to the necessary stages and processes of change management. The strength of Knoster model is the identification of five aspects of change to be taken into account in order for successful change to take place. The Knoster model is very clear and is a linear model of change management. Bolman and Deal offer a complementary analysis of change management that takes into account the human aspects of change.
