ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that how schools and their special educational needs coordinator (SENCo) can work effectively with children and young people to learn about their views, feelings and wish, and consider how the views of young people should be used when planning for their support. It examines both at the personal skills of the SENCo and teachers and at features of the whole-school approach. SEN support at college should always be discussed with the young person. From the age of 16, young people are expected to take an active part in their reviews and in decision-making about support and outcomes. In line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the new Code is explicit that children and young people must be part of the decision-making process with regard to all aspects of their learning, insofar as this is possible.
