ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the findings of the research conducted on the banking sector in the finance industry and elicits the informants understanding of the meaning of integrity. The finance industry includes a range of sub-industries such as the conventional banking, credit agencies, insurance companies, pension funds, hedge fund companies, venture capital firms, and so on. "Doing the right thing" was the commonly used phrase by the informants to explain what the meaning of integrity was to them. Organizational socialization sets up role expectations for individuals, communicates which organizational goals are important, and establishes appropriate ways to achieve those goals. Social learning theory explains why the informants' strategy to provide a role model to emulate could be an effective approach to foster integrity. The industry structure was seen as the strongest barrier to integrity in banking and other services in the finance industry due to the presence of many moral hazards.
