Adverbs in a broad sense

In Swahili, there are relatively few inherent adverbs, that is, words whose primary role is to qualify adjectives and verbs. This is the case for terms such as sana “very”, polepole “slowly”, mapema “early”, barabara “very well” (with the accent on the second syllable), or zamani “long ago”. There are also the interrogative adverbs -je? “how?”, vipi? “how?”, namna gani? “how (in what manner)”, which are illustrated in (1).
