ABSTRACT

Resurrected from a heavily contaminated town gas production site, the Westergasfabriek unites the 6-hectare nineteenth-century Westerpark to its east with open polder landscape to the north. This includes a Waternatuuruin (water nature park), a Ruig Speel terrein (adventure play area), allotments and the Sint Barbara cemetery. The entire 50-hectare area is now referred to as the Westerpark, a name also used for the neighbourhood to the west of the inner city and for its former district council. Like The Nether lands as a whole, the Westerpark area displays a combination of natural vulnerability and cultural progressiveness. And the Westergasfabriek itself provides a heady mix of indoor and outdoor culture, business and entertainment.
