ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the severe environment pollution and natural resource degradation and the widespread problems with food safety and huge food waste. It examines large and increasing income inequalities. The Chinese government is aware of the importance of supplying foods to the Chinese people chiefly with domestic production. In recent years, various rules, regulations and laws to protect the environment have been issued to guide industrial and mining businesses to take care of the environment. Agricultural production also makes a significant contribution to China's environment pollution. Air pollution from vehicle emission has become increasingly severe in China since the 1990s. In 2014, 30 per cent of nitrogen oxide (NOx) discharged into the atmosphere was from vehicles. Social stability is another important indicator of a country's food security status. There has been a lack of reforms to political or governmental institutions for thousands of years in China.
