ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents a comprehensive study of renewable energy (RE) in East Asia in the context of the region's new developmentalism. The new developmentalism is founded on the synthesis of state capacity theory (SCT) and ecological modernisation theory (EMT). Thus, the core common ground between SCT and EMT lies in three closely inter-related areas: transformative economic development, the key role of the state, and the state's partnership with business and society. The book argues that the renewable energy development and decarbonising economic activity per se requires deep socio-cultural and socio-technical transformations, and therefore the relational dimension of East Asia's new developmentalism is critically important. The continued growth of distributed renewable energy applications and ensuing expansion of the region's prosumer community should too lead to stronger societal engagement in East Asia's new developmentalism, making people more active stakeholders in energy sustainability.
