ABSTRACT

Among the greatest strengths of media arts education is its emphasis on critical analysis and creative production as means of empowering students to discover their own voices and express themselves. The national standards discuss the potential of media arts education to encourage students to be able to connect the art they analyze and create to various contexts, purposes and values, such as social trends, power, equality and personal or cultural identity. This chapter focuses on Ms. Sarkeesian, a social studies teacher, reminding her students that their work's production value is only as good as its social conscience. The students learn to shoot video, edit audio, even code a little bit. The chapter demonstrates that video games which are often presumed to inhibit social development that are actually an effective medium to discuss the potentially positive role that media art can play in helping young people connect with others and the world around them.
