ABSTRACT

This chapter is useful for theatre teachers and their students who engage in aspects of creating that build theatre literacies. The skills and knowledge associated with creating can be natural product of theatre work that involves students in authentic theatre participation. Authentic theatre participation in this case specifically refers to students engaging with theatre texts, processes, and literacies as if they were theatre practitioners working in real-world theatre settings. When creating, theatre practitioners must be dually responsible for both print and nonprint texts. The authentic theatre participation requires that students have facility with a variety of theatre texts. Using these theatre-specific texts and processes, teachers can expose students to multimodal literacies appropriate for the theatre learning space. While the chapter provides one example of how texts, processes, and literacies can enrich a theatre arts classroom, it is important to remember that there are many and varied ways to engage in creation in theatre settings.
