ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the various roles for a visual development artist within a 3D game pipeline as well as the 3D-specific roles and their tools. The visual development artist's role within a traditional 2D game development pipeline while also taking note that 3D graphics are being utilized at an exponential rate in the mobile/web industry. A character animator is tasked with bringing the character to life by rigging and animating the previously modeled 3D geometry. An FX animator is responsible for the creation of any "special" effects within a game. Concept artist is the ideal role for a visual development artist to inhabit within a 3D art pipeline. This role is essentially identical to that concept artists undertake in a 2D art pipeline in that they're "the first artist to execute the character, creatures, environment, and objects for the world the game design team has mapped out."
