ABSTRACT

Character design, outside of the fact that "Every element in a character design should be telling us something about them." Circles are typically used to convey friendly, cute characters. A successful silhouette should provide a viewer with a solid amount of information about a particular character, as the silhouette will encompass a viewer's "first read." Another vital aspect of character design is the concept of "graphic versus volumetric." It's important to note that this is not an either/or decision. When creating more than one character, keep in mind that they populate the same "world" and, as a result, should all share a similar visual style. A crucial step in ensuring that our characters play off each other well is to line them up next to one another. Color should be used in the same way all the other elements of character design we've discussed are used—as a communicative device.
