ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author documents his reflective journey through the various stages of the professional doctorate course and may assist the reader to see the similarities of their own progression through either undergraduate or postgraduate studies and beyond, into the world of practice in the caring professions. The professional doctorate sits at the top end of academic qualifications and is the equivalent of a PhD in terms of length, complexity and the award conferred. A good starting point for learning the art of reflection is to understand and acknowledge our personal goals for pursuing our various courses and subsequent areas of professional practice. The professional doctorate journal of reflection is without doubt the gel that holds together all six documents presented in the chapter. It provides catharsis and perspective, empowerment, space for cognitive dissonance and possible resolution, and space to learn about self.
