ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces philosophical traditions of thought, defines understand key thinkers in philosophy, and explains the contribution they make to professional practice. It examines philosophical traditions of thought and the contribution they make to professional practice. The traditions of critical theory, phenomenology, pragmatism, postmodernism and feminism will be considered, to provide an orientation to professional practice. The provision of philosophy for professionals is a unique and distinctive engagement that is often neglected in developing reflective practitioners and professionals. The practice of philosophy for professionals has some distinct benefits for practitioners. The chapter charts the major intellectual movements, the classical writings and the major figures of European philosophy. As each intellectual movement is reviewed, the contribution made to professional practice is considered. The use of visual methodologies intends to stimulate a different register and provoke thought and reflection from a different standpoint.
